„Designing the Boston Sax Shop reed line has been a dream of mine, stemmed from the frustration that many of us as players have searching for that ‘perfect’ reed. For years I personally struggled to find a well balanced reed that would promote a warm, homogenous tone while still allowing me to project. Most ‘jazz’ cut reeds seemed to play too ‘bright’ and ‘buzzy’ but offered the projection I needed while ‘classical’ reeds had the depth and evenness I was searching for but simply could not cut across a band. So with the help of the finest French cane manufacturer in the world, I designed a ‘hybrid’ jazz reed that had qualities of both cuts, creating a reed that did exactly what I asked; providing a warm and dark tone while still being able to be pushed. I certainly hope you give them a try and enjoy them as much as I do!

‘Inspired by the past, crafted for the future’

I’ve been very lucky in my life to enjoy some incredible classic mouthpieces and was constantly on the search for something that had tonal homogeny throughout all ranges, but that I could get plenty of volume out of. The S-Series hard rubber tenor mouthpiece is a result of the fruits of that search and I’m proud to share a design that in my opinion encapsulates a remarkable amount of core, depth and evenness for a ‘jazz’ mouthpiece while still having the ability to cut. It’s a reference to the great ‘horseshoe’ chamber pieces of the past, but made for the modern player.

Creating the BSS line of mouthpieces has also given me an opportunity to approach the boutique market with a fresh methodology. After a lot of research, we partnered with one of the most technically advanced CNC machine shops in the country, giving us the ability to dial in an unbelievable level of precision and absolute consistency piece to piece. No need to worry if you are going to get a ‘good one’ because they are all great. In addition, every single one is hand finished at the shop and personally play tested by yours truly.

I couldn’t be much more excited to share with you my first mouthpiece offering which represents for me the pinnacle of my product design over the past years and a milestone for Boston Sax Shop.

‘Inspired by the past, crafted for the future’

There is something very intriguing about large chamber tenor saxophone mouthpieces. When they are right, they offer an incredible amount of spread and flexibility in tone that just can’t be beat.

However! Finding that perfect piece in vintage form and in a more modern tip size can be a challenge. Personally, I struggled for years to find a Reso Chamber model Link that once opened up retained all the characteristics and potential that I knew these pieces could have. Throughout the years of hunting, purchasing and paying for refacing I only lucked out on one! Inspired by that piece I spent the better part of a year to re-imagine it with power of CNC technology and after many prototypes, found that perfect balance of baffle profile for the larger chamber in bigger than vintage tip sizes. The R-Series is the large chamber mouthpiece for the modern player.

For me, the R-Series is simply put: lush. Yes, I know thats an esoteric word but I really think it fits! The large chamber provides a free and spread sound and the medium roll over baffle gives it plenty of power to project without losing the warmth and width of the tonal center.

As always, each Boston Sax Shop mouthpiece is hand finished in post CNC production and play-tested to my exacting standards here at the shop.

E-Series Tenor

The E Series is the all-rounder, the piece that can both cut through a loud band but still whisper subtone on a ballad. Inspired by the tonal characteristics of the coveted ‘Early Babbit’ transitional Links I really wanted to find that perfect balance of brilliance and warmth that the best vintage ones have. The end result (after many many prototypes) ended up with a interior profile that utilizes a unique longer roll over baffle. As opposed to the shorter and higher baffles found in the vintage models, I find the gentle roll over shape to provides an equal amount of power without sacrificing evenness which is so important to me. The end result is once again, incredibly versatile: punchy, warm and easy to play!

Ligaturen

Superlative Blattschraube Tenor- und Altsaxophon

The impetus for Superlative Ligature literally started as a midnight sketch on the back of a cocktail napkin at the NAAM show in 2018. I wanted to create something solid, practical, vintage inspired and a yet fresh offering for saxophone players. The design language draws from my favorite three ligatures from the past: The Selmer ‘2 Screw’, Magnitone and Harrison. The result of 2 years of prototyping and listening to the feedback of some of the most notable saxophonists in the world is the Superlative Ligature. It features a single piece body design made up of 3 distinct radiuses that allow for plenty of reed/mouthpiece vibration while being solid and stable fitting on the mouthpiece. The laser cut reed contact plate grips evenly while giving the middle section of the reed room to breathe, as this is a common area for a new reed to swell, creating the optimum seal. The two screw inverted orientation is simple and ergonomic.

The ‘hand finished’ option involves adding a jewelry technique finish called stippling to the outside of the ligature. Each one is individual and personally done by myself

The Superlative Ligature fits the following hard rubber mouthpieces and similar models to:

Otto Link, D’Addario, Selmer, Jody Jazz, Theo Wanne, Ted Klum, Mouthpiece Cafe, Johaness Gerber, Retro Revival, 10M Fan, Meyer, Brillhart, SYOS
